Less is More Mission Report

By Tcional

For this mission I have decided to play with my friend using a Limited Insertion list with two 3-man fireteams. Here I used a Riot Grrls Core and mixed Reverend Custodier Haris. Personally I like using a Custodier over Moira with Kusanagi and a Healer, but I still have a lot to work out. For some part I have already covered use of that Haris during Mission 4 (LI).

Deployment

So generally I tried to deploy both of my Fireteams near the front, especially the Kusanagi Haris, but still in cover. Now I realised that I have totally forgot that my Reverends have Forward Deployment Lv1, but I don’t think that would have changed much with how the game went. I wanted to have one Haris on left side of the table and the other on the right, Lunokhod with Koalas in the middle to push him forward. It was meant to let me push into my Quarter and keep the position. Then I had a AHD Zero in the middle of the table that should be able to move into my opponents’ quarters and a KHD on the side.

Well, my opponent as he likes had a Securitate FT with a MSR Grenzer in a second group for ARO purposes. Next to them there’s a Warcor, Mary Problems in the side, 2 Camo in Prone behind cover and as usual with many shades at his place he hides 2 Transductor Zonds with black primer only in the shadow. Then he puts down a HMG Kriza as reserve.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Bakunin

So yeah, stuff happens. Kusanagi walks up a short, fires at Grenzer at 27” and takes a crit on 16 (he saw her out of cover). I forgot to put her down with courage, so I can’t put up a White Noise zone that I should have used in the first place. Then Kusanagi just walks closer to close the distance to shoot the Grenzer and the Warcor I thought I could have missed. Aaaaand another crit from Grenzer on 16.

Zero KHD that is quite close to Mary walks up, Warcor fails to Discover while Grenzer wait and Zero gets out of their sight. Surprise Shot Hacking on Mary and she hits a Crit. Then I try to figure out a position for Riot Grrls. One luckily manages to go down the tower – I have no Idea why I put a Combi + Blitzen up there – while surviving Grenzers shots. A spitfire goes up to the corner and takes a Crit from a Grenzer. She tries again and gets another one. Yep – he had 5 and I had none on my first Active turn while having 5 dice vs 2 most of the tie. At this moment I knew the game was basically lost. I put Riot Grrls in cover and moved Lunokhod a little.

Bottom of 1 – Tunguska

Then suddenly I get a Raoul near my DZ on Riot Grrls back. He comes closer while taking down Lunokhod, exchanging fire with AHD Zero, puts him down with BS, sneaks up on my Riot Grrls and takes a BS Data Tracker down and then kills the other. Then Kriza comes into play. Goes through my Opponent’s left flank and takes cover near my Healer.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Bakunin

Somehow I manage to kill Kriza with Custodier. At this point I basically have only 3 models on table. And have nothing else to do.

Bottom of 2 – Tunguska

Raoul fortifies his position with Drop Bears totally out of my range.

At this point we end the game with a clear win on my opponent’s side.

Post Game Analysis

So having Kusanagi fire at Grenzer with -3 from range was a really bad idea. Him at 16s with 2 dice with my 5 dice at 8s we had basically even odds to hit each other. I should have put down the White Noise from Custodier, walked up to sure 24” with Kusanagi and shoot at Warcor to check for range while Grenzer can’t see me through White Noise zone and then shoot him. He would ignore -6 from lack of LoF to Kusanagi thanks to his SSL2 bonus from the fireteam I would have over 60% for a success. It was my first and biggest mistake and the rest was just an aftermath. Obviously having 5 crits shot at my face while I had none in over 20 dice was really painful.

So we played again a couple of days ago. I wanted to get a rematch at my place. Again Bakunin vs Tunguska but this time I had only Kusanagi Haris (I honestly forgot that it was supposed to be a Core fireteam, not just a 3-man). This time I decided to take much more models for the game and see how it would go. The mission was Xenosignal. We picked it as a preparation for a Tournament that will take place near Warsaw that we’ll be using modified missions from Xenotech Narrative Event missions released by CB.

Deployment

Tunguska’s Deploment (after some Turn 1 action):

Bakunin’s Deployment

Again 2 fireteams and I tried to put them on 2 sides of the table. Generally when I take a Moderator Core with MSR I put an extra Moderator to fill the link back up in case of death back to 5 man Core, so I had 6 of them near sniper. So my Kusanagi link ended up having a shot at Grenzer like Securitate Spec-Ops. My Moderator fireteam was supposed to be able to secure the left side. When we sat down to the game and I was picking Classifieds I thought I didn’t have too many specialists, but when I actually deployed and started thinking I realised that I had 3 (since CoC on Spec Ops still counts) in Moderator fireteam, 3 in Kusanagi Haris and a Zero in the midfield.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Tunguska

Securitate fireteam activates with Grenzer like Spec Ops moving up to the cover and the rest scattering on the left-most side. The Grenzer stands up and kill my Moderator MSR.

Tunguska starts with 2 Coordinated Orders of Kriza and 2 Camo markers (Hecklers). Kriza stops near his left Antenna, Jammer goes up to my Mines near my right Antenna and Red Fury attacks position of my Moderator Fireteam. Red Fury takes down 2 Transductors and goes into suppressive. So does Kriza near his Antenna in cover.

Bottom of 1 – Bakunin

My Impets go first. Some smoke from Morlock and Chimera in crucial corridor to reach RF Heckler and to block MSR Securitate from Moderator link.

Then I decide to start with my Haris. Moving up Custodier and Healer closer to Kusanagi and popping Kusanagi out of the corner to hit Kriza. I moved out of the Full Cover for Securitate and I have to spread the burst:

We roll the dice for Kriza FTF and this happens (red for Kusanagi – she was hitting on 11s and Kriza on 1s):

She goes down to Securitates hit (I think it was even critical – again…). So now I have to deal with Kriza the other way I wanted to.

Zero KHD activates and shoots RF Heckler in the back.

Then Moderators in reformed Core advance. They take Heckler for In Extremis Recovery, Moderator Hacker goes up to Antenna and Spitfire advances to Partial cover vs Kriza. Kriza goes down in 1 or 2 orders through guessing wrong range band (he broke Suppressive and we were at 23-24”). Hacker hacks the Antenna and they all fall back to DZ.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Tunguska

Again Raoul goes down on the table. Takes out hopeless KHD Zero and goes up to the corner of some building near my Antenna. Mary comes out, takes her Antenna, retakes mine and ends her turn near the other building.

Securitates advance again and their sniper relocates to the other corner of the building to see the action near the Antennas on the other side of table.

Bottom of 2 – Bakunin

Chimera goes in to Mary with her favourite stuff – Eclipse Smoke and Pupniks. Slaughters Mary, and sends Pupniks to Raoul. He drops some Drop Bears as Anti-Personnel Mines so it takes me awhile to get to him and as Chimera tries to take down Warcor, Raoul takes care of the Pupniks. Moderators again advance to take back the Antenna, but Raoul is too hard to kill for them with 2 Unconscious Pupniks still in base contact with him. They fortify around Raoul and out of Snipers sights. I also retake again my Antenna.

Meanwhile some not really relevant stuff happens on the other side of table with Custodier and Healer.

Turn 3

Top of 3 – Tunguska

Raoul exchanges a lot of fire and mines with Moderators taking down 2-3 of them. Spektr appears near Moderators, takes down Chimera and helps Raoul in fighting Moderators to secure their Antenna and stop their Advance to Mary’s Antenna.

Securitates advance, hack the Antenna on their left side of table and secure the middle Beacon and Search Area.

Bottom of 3 – Bakunin

Not really much left to do. I move Healer to the other group. Put down White Noise with Custodier so that Healer can go without fire from Grenzer. Zero takes down Securitate watching Healers position. She pushes the button on 4th Antenna (going for 2:2) and rushes to the middle of the table. After all she ends up 2” short of being able to shoot Securitates near XenoBeacon with her BS.

Post Game Analysis

The game end 7-1 for Tunguska.

Again I failed to see the very same maneuver with White Noise to deal with quasi-Grenzer and Kriza. If Kusanagi could have fired at Kriza with full 5 dice vs his 3 dice at 1s we was most likely dead – but then again my friend has incredible luck when it comes to crits in ARO. Except for the dice roll I’m not sure I could have done anything else much better.

Overall fun mission. As I love Reverend models I will probably use this option of Moderator ARO Core and Kusanagi Haris more often. Especially to learn to use Custodier (and her White Noise) there better.
