Deployment

Getting a grasp with offensive deployment for my first turn still isn’t obvious for me. I kind of look at possible ARO spots for my opponent, but then proceed to ignore them when deploying my units. Maybe not all spots. I’ve anticipated something standing on the middle building in WB’s DZ, so I decided to put my Fireteam: Core with an MSR Moderator on the lookout for that one and kept my SIn-Eater with and HMG out of the sight of that spot to cover right side approach to Panoply. Morlocks on the flanks to cover them, Taskmaster on the left to have decent fire lanes on his approach. Chimera on the right side  with a Morlock to better the cover of Sin-Eater and be safe herself.

Last to mention, but first to deploy were my Infiltration units. I had 2 Zeros with Boarding Shotguns, a KHD Zero and Bran do Castro. For BS Zeros I had a use in mind similar to Bran’s (just as I had in one of the previous missions about Zeros). I’ve played Bran mainly with Boarding Shotgun in N3 and learned that he doesn’t necessarily need his CC skills and Climbing Plus with Super-Jump to be effective and 2 Zeros with the same equipment cost a little bit more. So I took 2 of them AND Bran with Combi for longer ranges. I found a nice spot on the left side of the table near the teal container and put one of my Zeros there and he succeeded at 9s. Another one wanted to take the spot on the huge building on the right, but failed miserably, and I easily put Bran there instead (Infiltration on 16s). They were meant to bite hard if possible and get rid of uncomfortable ARO if needed.

Fairly standard. My infiltrators got countered by 2 Long Ya’s with Minelayer. They put mines on my approach and the rest of the models hid in the middle of DZ protecting the AC2. Fireteam: Core with 2 Shang Ji’s, 2 Zhanshi’s and Lei Gong took the spot I anticipated and HMG Shang Ji looked at the middle of the board, while HRL one patrolled the rooftops with Paramedic at his back. 2 Flash Pulse REMs on the left and right side of the AC2 and Jing Qo-Monk duo to be ready to attack on the right. EVO Hacker hid in the bottom-right corner.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Bakunin

First target was HRL Shang Ji. My left side Morlock got MOV 8-4 and died to a crit from the HRL, so my Taskmaster didn’t have a safe attack path. Bran round the corner of the containers and shot at Shang Ji hoping to be inside 16” range for his combi and in worse range band for the HRL. It was 18” and Triple Zero got wiped off the table.

The only other thing that could take care of this problem was my MSR Moderator in a full Fireteam. It was one of the options previously, but I thought Bran had better odds at his position, and my Moderators rarely kill anything, especially the MSR ones.

This time, though, lady Luck was smiling at the brave Moderator. I didn’t anticipate the HRL Hundun to appear near Shang Ji, but Moderator managed to put both of them down in a single or 2 Bursts of his MSR. That’s what I call a good shooting!

Taskmaster pushed forward, planted a Koala next to the Panoply and got stunned by the FP REM. Having one Order left for him I put him in cover behind the Panoply.

With the remaining Orders of the 2nd group I put Morlock into a safe position (he was stunned at the beginning of the Turn by the other Flash Pulse REM, relocated Sin-Eater forward to be more pressing on a backwards placed nest that contained 2 Unconscious ARO pieces and a Paramedic and pushed the recamouflaged failed-infiltrator-Zero to a corner of a wall to help cover the Taskmaster.

Bottom of 1 – White Banner

Paramedic turned to Shang Ji, MediKited him in base contact aaaand succeeded! There’s another one laying on the ground, Hundun. Zhanshi took her chance aaand another success. So now, WB used CT to get standing HRL Shang Ji into the fireteam.

Monk with Jing Qo threw down smoke and Fireteam moved into the middle part to cover AC2.

After that Jing Qo decided to take her interest in my Taskmaster and approached him. I decided to take chances with my Zero and was shooting her with his Boarding Shotgun every time she was spending all 3 of her Burst to shoot Taskmaster. Good armor definitely saved me on this one, because he tanked 3 Bursts and took only one wound, while Zero missed all his shots. At this point someone forced Zero (could be Shang Ji with AP HMG) to take full cover and eventually she got a better shot and put Taskmaster down into Unconscious.

Jing Qo backed up a bit behind a container and solidified her position there, while Monk started staring at the wall for no apparent reason.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Bakunin

My man Morlock did a thing. He jumped into the open and threw smoke. My opponent forgot that Lei Gong had a free shot and we treated this one as an F2F roll, but it was only 1 of the 4 F2F rolls. Morlock had his PH boosted by 3 from his MetaChemistry Roll and rolled 19 on his Smoke Grenade and none of the opponents managed to Crit him. At this point, Kuba (White Banner player), realised that his Monk had been staring directly into the wall and had a bit of a laugh.

Morlock did what he could do best and that was jumping onto the Panoply to grab… Grenades out of it. It wasn’t enough to fight all the firepower that was staring at him, so he just stopped that considering his fate.

Back to the main event. MSR Moderator again shot the HRL users. This time he managed to die. Just like that. I think he took down Hundun, but he burnt nonetheless.

I needed another approach so I pulled my Riot Grrl with 2 of the Moderators (Paramedic and Hacker) through the middle of the table to a position in front of Unconscious Taskmaster. Riot Grrl then proceeded to push back Jing Qo, take down Flash Pulse REM, Monk and Shang Ji. Unfortunately Paramedic was standing too close to her and got burnt in the process leaving just 2 models there.

Having dealt with Shang Ji, I recamoed and pulled my unfortunate Zero forward closer to the Panoply. He was Discovered on the way by AP HMG Shang Ji, but was out of his sight long before he could start shooting.

Bottom of 2 – White Banner

White Banner started their turn 2 hard. They wanted to take down Morlock near the Panoply and accidentally pulled out Zhanshi too far. Shang Ji shot Morlock dead, while Morlock took his luck with Assault Pistol B1 to take out Zhanshi. Aaaaand the Lieutenant fell Unconscious.

That’s a huge loss for White Banner. Paramedic took a shot with her MediKit and hit, but Zhanshi failed his PH Roll and died. Angry Chinese got frenzied and Lei Gong pushed forward hard to get to Sin-Eater and managed to kill him in a single burst. Then he popped into a corner behind a Panoply, taking a weapon out of it (ADHL) and then rolled for something against my HVT, but failed.

Anticipating a swarm of Uberfallkommando, Liang Kai joined the Lei Gong to cover him from potential adversaries, aaaand…

Turn 3

Top of 3 – Bakunin

…Uberfallkommando threw 2 Eclipse Grenades taking out any potential LoFs. Chimera commanded the Pupniks to take out one of the weapons from Panoply (it was a Multi Rifle, not very useful on BS4 Pupnik), while preparing to attack Wandering Monk in a 3 versus 1. Liang Kai took out 1 of the Pupniks, while the other bit him to death. Then they proceeded to bite Lei Gong in a 2 versus 1, kill him too, all the while Chimera walked to a Panoply. Only to fail her WIP roll by 2 and stockpile Pupniks around her.

Bottom of 3 – White Banner

At this point I had 2 weapons from Panoply (Morlock and Pupnik), and a full STR AC2. White Banner was in Loss of Lieutenant, had full STR AC2, 1 weapon from Panoply (Lei Gong) and a classified Objective that was failed to accomplish. My Camo Marker was very close to enemy HVT and my HVT was protected by Chimera and her Pupniks. Shang Ji takes a step forward and shoots Chimera down with his Pistol. I should have Dodged forward to block him from reaching my HVT, but we were getting low on available play time and didn’t have much time to think about it. So Chimera goes down to a shot that was saved by her (but my opponent thought Shang Ji had Heavy Pistol, not Pistol and she rolled 12), Shang Ji took out a weapon and with last Command Token used one of his irregular Orders to Secure my HVT.

Result

4 – 4 Tie

Post Game Analysis

Most important part of this game were my Infiltration pieces. 2 out of 3 (though Bran had very high chances of success) managed to get deployed near enemy DZ. My opponent had 2 Long Ya’s that he treats as auto-includes for White Banner since they are so cheap and good and used their Minelaying Mines to deny some approaches for my Infiltrators.

I was planning to use 8-4 MOV Morlock to ‘defuse’ the Mine near Zero, but he died to the only ARO he had had to face on the way in. Then the Zero took up a role of a typical Fiday that one of my friends loves to use as just a threat. He would deploy them somewhere close to force you to waste your entire turn on peeling him out or just ignore him and in case you make a mistake, the Fiday would punish you for sticking your nose too far out. Zero almost got an occasion for that if Jing Qo tried to reach the Panoply and was putting pressure on enemy HVT.

Bran on the other side of the table had more options, but I miscalculated his odds by a far margin and lost him for no solid reason. My opponent almost decided to show Hundun at this moment, but decided to hold her off and leave Shang Ji on his own to take Bran out.

The third infiltrating Zero managed to play some part in the game despite his failed Roll. Having 3 free shots at Jing Qo that was assaulting my Taskmaster was like asking for a bruise by my opponent.

Overall we both made mistakes that swinged the result in either favor at multiple points of the game. Be it free shot at Lt Zhanshi or shooting instead of Dodging on Uberfallkommando vs Shang Ji. I think both of us were satisfied with the result and yet again this mission proved to be a difficult one. Last time we played it we didn’t even touch either of the AC2’s as well and it all went down to a few Panoply Rolls and Classified Objectives.
