Mission 028: Kauyon Deployment
Okay, so, wrong game, but it’s still a good idea. For those of you who don’t follow the reference, Kauyon means “Patient Hunter” for the Tau faction in Warhammer 40k. Yes yes, that game. It doesn’t translate particularly well to to the tabletop in 40k, but I think Infinity is a game where patience can really deliver concrete results.
I recently played a game where my entire plan hinged around baiting my opponent into focusing his energy on a particular part of the table and revealing a Hidden Deployment trooper to flip the game from a horrible loss into a win. You can check it out here:
I want to encourage you to leverage that kind of play in your games, especially because N4 is a more lethal edition than N3 (although ARM is more relevant so this is debatable). In any case, my actual point is that if you have a determined and equipped opponent, it won’t be too much trouble for them to remove key specialists from your forces. Deny them the ability to do this by hiding your specialists or key objective grabbers until the last possible moment.
It’s even possible that you’ll have units on the table that you’ll never use–it gives you the confidence that you have a solid backup plan, so you can make those risky plays. See this battle report for an example of what I mean:
So, when you design your lists for a mission, take some troops that start off the table or at least in a marker state. Don’t reveal them till the last possible moment, and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat!
The Mission
- Design a list with at least one unit that starts off the table or in a Marker State.
- Come up with a plan to use that unit on Turn 3 to accomplish a key objective!
- Play a game of N4, and do not activate that unit until Turn 3. You can reveal hidden deployment on Turn 3, walk your AD troop on, or finally activate that Camo token that everyone thought was a mine.
- Write in with your thoughts on the exercise of being a patient hunter!
